This is the excellent German translation of "The Power that Preserves," book 3 in the first "Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever" trilogy. The German first edition of this series was translated from English and published Knauer (competitors Heyne and Knauer basically produce pretty much all of the available science fiction/fantasy paperback titles in Germany, both for original German works and translations of English titles).

This book is every bit as good in German as it is in English--though a decidely thicker read due to the German language's tendency toward more lengthy sentence structure / and compound nouns that can run nearly half a line for one word... The truly unique character of Thomas Covenant and the land that he is forced to experience and at least acknowledge--if not actually accept the permanence of--is very well rendered -however briefly--and directly challenges the Land's (and his) arch enemy, Lord Foul, with absolutely everything of value at stake in the confrontation. Stephen R. Donaldson's rather esoteric vocabulary choices are a challenge in English (first time in my life after high school that I have EVER had to look up a word); auf Deutsch, things are no different, hehe!

I do recommend that anyone who can read German should take advantage of that skill to order this volume (I stress, it is only Volume 3, the final book in the first trilogy of a multi-trilogy series) through a German Web site -(e.g., Amazon.de)--and in this way pay only about 19 Euros (in the $20 to $30 range) for the book plus Intl. shipping, rather than the whopping $125 (!!! - they must be mad!) single volume price quoted by some of the few U.S. sellers who offer this German edition...
