About the Author

Kristofer Layon is a designer, design educator, and product manager who lives in Minneapolis, MN. He currently focuses on mobile design for the web, and user experience and product design for iOS and Android applications.

Kris has been a graphic designer since 1993 and a web designer since 1996. Since then he has designed web sites for engineers, urban planners, city governments, artists, musicians, retailers, the National Park Service, and over thirty higher education clients. In addition to designing web sites, Kris has taught graphic design and typography in the University of Minnesota’s College of Design, where he was also an academic advisor for two years. Kris was also the founding director of MinneWebCon, Minnesota’s Web Conference, from 2008-2011.

Kris has a Master of Fine Arts degree in interactive design and a bachelor of arts degree in German and pre-architecture. He is a member of AIGA — the Professional Association for Design, the HighEdWeb Association, Design Research Society, and Minnesota Interactive Marketing Association. His work has won design awards from the AIGA and the Society of Marketing Professional Services (SMPS), and his early adoption of web video was featured on Apple’s web site in 1999.

I purchased this book to learn how to program with NimbleKit for the iPad and iPhone. Let's just say that I am very impressed. I know HTML and JavaScript, so this book is a refresher on the code I already know. Yet with HTML5 there are definitely some new things to learn.

NimbleKit is used within Apple's own Xcode programming software. Yes, you read that correctly.

What do I like about this book? It discusses everything from starting to program an application using NimbleKit to submitting it to the Apple iTunes App Store. Since purchasing this book I have created an application for a music group (being released in early March), and I am planning on releasing a lot of educational software in the near future. Since I am going to be a high school History teacher next year I have a lot of apps that I would like to make for my future students (and anyone else that appreciates educational apps).

If you are wondering how to make iOS apps using HTML and JavaScript get this book.

If you are a web designer/developer, you know how important it is to move into the mobile market. With the help of this book, you can now take your web app and make it native. With HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and NimbleKit you are on your way to becoming the next big thing in the App Store. I totally recommend this book if you want to make iPhone apps without learning Objective-C.

I have not read every page of Kris Layon's new and most timely book on developing iPhone aps but several things impress me at this point.

First, the writing is very clear and accessible. The purpose of this book is modest but thoroughly explored and this is reflected in the writing style. He approaches his topic with a genuine desire to share what has worked well for him and what, in turn, could work very well for anyone who has the desire to explore this arena -- for fun, challenge, or maybe even profit.

Another aspect of the book that makes it more enjoyable than your average manual is the author's quiet sense of humor. It comes through in many small ways, nothing LOL, more the kind of off-hand, casual kind of remarks that give you insight into this author's personality--and how often do you find THAT in a book of this type?

I would highly recommend this book to anyone with the knowledge base and the interest in this kind of tech development work -- it's definitely the only manual you'll need to bring that clever idea for an ap into reality.
