The writing team of Michael and Mary Woods details the history of shipwrecks and other watery disasters in this well-done release from Lerner Publications. Published in 2008, DISASTERS AT SEA is aimed at the 9-12 audience.
The authors trace famous disasters that have happened to people on various boats and ships such as the Titanic, Sultana, ferryboat Joola, Achille Lauro, etc. Although most involve "at-sea" disasters like fires, collisions with icebergs, etc., the Woods also touch on the 7 December 1941 Pearl Harbor attack. The book's six chapters detail: What are Disasters at Sea; Recipe for Disaster; Disaster Ferries; Rescue, Relief and Recovery; Measuring a Menace; and The Future along with various appendices (timeline, glossary, further resources, etc.). Many first-person reminiscences of disaster survivors are included, a definite plus in my book.
Though the Amazon blurb says DISASTERS AT SEA is suitable for readers 9-12, I disagreed. I feel the book is a bit advanced for the 9-10 set but I may be wrong!
In any case, DISASTERS AT SEA is a nicely-done, very informative and well-illustrated summary of the "perils of the sea" for younger readers. Recommended.
