Among the standouts: Harry Stanton as the dryly laconic narrator, downtown filmmaker Jim Jarmusch as the Duke (Thompson's alter ego), Buck Henry as a sinister desk clerk, and Spinal Tap's Harry Shearer as a fatuous police chief. This was recorded before Terry Gilliam's 1998 film version with Johnny Depp, and in some ways it's even more faithful to its mad, visionary source material.
