From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up–Following a brief overview and introduction, the alphabetical entries in these accessible titles contain a brief definition of the topic; factual information, including statistics if appropriate; and facts versus fiction and question-and-answer sections. In Teens Speak sections, young people express their personal reactions to sexual violence, child abuse, and other topics. Charts, tables, and section headings break up the texts and make the books as reader-friendly as possible. All of the subjects are covered in an evenhanded and nonjudgmental manner. Abuse addresses such topics as bullying, child molestation, date rape, hazing, and domestic violence against both women and men, to mention just a few. Sexual Behavior discusses contraception, abortion, sexual orientation, STDs, and violence. When a subject under discussion is illegal or dangerous, this information is clearly pointed out by the author, detailing the risks involved. Other than this, there is no attempt to influence teens' feelings either in a positive or negative direction. Excellent resources for research or for teens who just want to get more information on these important issues.–Wendy Smith-D'Arezzo, Loyola College, Baltimore, MD Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From

Gr. 10-12. This user-friendly book from the Truth About series focuses on issues and questions relevant to today's teens. While avoiding religious or political stands, the book shares matter-of-fact information about the biological, social, and emotional aspects of sexual development and activity. Presented in an A to Z fashion, the alphabetized entries are divided into many related (and indexed) subcategories that present plenty of facts in a straightforward tone. Brief "Teen Speak" excerpts allow readers to share personal perspectives, and frequent Q & As answer relevant questions from teens, although information in some statistical graphs is already dated. Descriptions of sexual organs and intercourse are clear but never excessively graphic nor clinical, and the book includes no photographs or diagrams. The format may be uninspiring, but there's plenty of solid information here. Roger LeslieCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved
