NEWYORKONLONEVIRTUALELECTRONICLIBRARY provides authoritative, reliable and accurate information that is approved by expert librarians and updated frequently. NEWYORKONLONEVIRTUALELECTRONICLIBRARY provides fee-free access to thousands of current and brand-name publications and magazines, plus health, business, and consumer information, including copyrighted information not available to general users on the Internet – all 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from the convenience of your desktop or laptop. NEWYORKONLONEVIRTUALELECTRONICLIBRARY is provided free to users by the New York State Library via libraries across the state as well as via www.novelnewyork.org.
The New York State Library is among the 125 largest research libraries in North America. The State Library has provided the highest quality services to New York State’s executive, legislative, and judicial leaders for almost 200 years. The New York State Library’s mission has expanded to help ensure quality library and information services to all New Yorkers statewide through its Research Library, the Division of Library Development, the Talking Book and Braille Library, and NEWYORKONLONEVIRTUALELECTRONICLIBRARY – the statewide online library. The New York State Library is part of the Office of Cultural Education, within the New York State Education Department.
The Research Library serves New Yorkers statewide through collections of over 20 million items, including law, social and health sciences, legislative matters, technology, education, history, federal and state government documents, and manuscripts and rare books. In addition to its extensive circulating collections, the Research Library serves government, researchers, and other onsite users with access to scholarly literature, technology, the sciences, and business as well as offering deep web access to high end research and development electronic and Internet resources. The Research Library preserves rare historic treasures in its collections, including the preliminary draft of the Emancipation Proclamation – in Lincoln’s own handwriting, the first draft of George Washington’s farewell address, and the letters of former slave and prominent black anti-slavery activist and orator Frederick Douglass. Every New Yorker 18 and older can borrow directly from the New Library’s circulating collection by applying for a Resident Borrower’s Card. The card also enables holders to have direct remote access to NEWYORKONLONEVIRTUALELECTRONICLIBRARY – the statewide online library.
The Division of Library Development provides expert leadership, funding, and training for New York’s 7,000 libraries and library systems. Staff experts work with librarians, trustees, school administrators, public officials, and local leaders to solve problems and find new ways of making library services and resources available to their community. Library Development administers more than $100 million in state and federal aid to New York’s libraries and helps New York’s libraries take full advantage of federal and private funding programs like E-rate telecommunications discounts and Gates Library Foundation grants.
A part of the Research Library, the Talking Book and Braille Library (TBBL) provides Braille and cassette books, playback equipment, descriptive videos, and large-print books accessible to New Yorkers who are visually, physically, or learning disabled. Children and young adults from ages 3 and up may receive free library service and materials at home and in school as well as at the Research Library in Albany. TBBL serves over 38,000 New Yorkers in 55 upstate counties.
